Sovereign Hill Ballarat: A Guide to Australia's Gold Rush Living Museum

Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is one of Australia's most visited tourist attractions, a living museum built on the site of an actual goldfield and recreating life in the 1850s gold rush era. Visitors can pan for gold in the creek, watch costumed staff operate a working mine, visit the deep underground mine on a guided tour, and watch gold pouring demonstrations. The site also includes a working main street with period businesses, a Chinese quarter reflecting the significant Chinese population on the diggings, and the Blood on the Southern Cross son et lumiere show at night. Sovereign Hill operates daily and is best reached by car from Melbourne (approximately 1.5 hours) or by V/Line train to Ballarat station followed by a short taxi or ride.
