Best Coffee in Ballarat: Specialty Cafes, Sturt Street and the Goldfields City Scene

Ballarat's specialty coffee scene has grown significantly in step with the city's rising profile as a lifestyle and cultural destination, with a cluster of well-regarded cafes concentrated on Sturt Street, Dana Street and the surrounding inner CBD that have set a high standard for espresso in a regional Victorian city. Sturt Street's broad tree-lined central boulevard is one of Victoria's most architecturally distinctive regional main streets and its cafe strip draws visitors as well as locals. The Art Gallery of Ballarat precinct and the Sovereign Hill museum on the city's south draw significant visitor numbers that support cafe trade in the surrounding area. Several Melbourne-trained baristas and specialty coffee operators have established Ballarat operations as the city attracts more Melbourne lifestyle-changers. Cafe Latte Art and a number of other independently operated specialty cafes have developed strong local followings. The Ballarat Beer Hall on Lydiard Street North has expanded the city's broader hospitality scene and raised expectations across food and beverage. Ballarat's cool climate relative to Melbourne makes it particularly well-suited to the warming, slow-paced cafe culture that specialty coffee supports.
