Ballarat City Council has announced an expanded free fitness initiative targeting residents aged 55 and over, removing cost barriers to active living for thousands of seniors across the region.

The program, launching next month, will offer twice-weekly sessions at five council-managed venues including the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Creswick Community Centre, and the East Ballarat Recreation Ground. Classes run Monday to Friday, with morning and early-evening slots designed to suit retired workers and carers.

"We've seen demand from our older residents who want to stay active but are hesitant about gym memberships or private classes," said Cr. Michelle Shaw, health and wellbeing portfolio holder. "These programs are completely free—no membership fees, no hidden costs."

Each session blends low-impact cardio, functional strength work, and balance exercises. Tuesday mornings at the Botanical Gardens lakeside pavilion will feature gentle walking groups paired with stretching, while Wednesday classes at the Sturt Street Sports Complex emphasize core stability and joint mobility. Friday afternoon sessions near Lake Wendouree focus on flexibility and fall prevention.

Qualified instructors—many trained through Ballarat Health Services' community wellness partnership—will adapt exercises on the spot. "We're not asking anyone to do a 100kg deadlift," one instructor explained. "The goal is helping people manage daily tasks: reaching the top shelf, carrying groceries, or enjoying a longer walk along the Rail Trail."

Initial uptake has been encouraging. A pilot program in Wendouree earlier this year attracted 140 participants. Council projects the expanded rollout will reach 400+ seniors by September.

For those wanting to continue at home, each participant receives a free resource sheet with 12 simple exercises designed for everyday fitness. The council also offers subsidised transport for residents without reliable access to venues—$2 per return journey through the existing community shuttle service.

"This isn't about elite athleticism," Cr. Shaw added. "It's about independence, connection, and proving that 55-plus doesn't mean sitting still."

Free enrolment opens 1 July at ballaratcity.vic.gov.au/fitness or by calling 1300 775 777. Sessions begin 4 August. For personalised medical advice about starting exercise, residents should consult their local GP.
