Ballarat's Winter Arts Season Heats Up as New Exhibitions and Live Events Draw Crowds

Ballarat's arts and entertainment scene is surging this winter, with galleries, theatres and live music venues reporting strong attendance across the past fortnight. The Art Gallery of Ballarat has extended its winter exhibition series, drawing more than 12,000 visitors since early June, according to gallery management.

Gallery Shows and Heritage Venues

The current exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat features works by contemporary regional artists alongside pieces from the permanent collection. The show runs until August 30, with entry at $15 for adults and $10 for concessions. Gallery officials say weekday afternoons are the quietest times to visit.

Her Majesty's Theatre on Lydiard Street is staging its winter season of live performances, including a cabaret series running July 17-26 and a musical production debuting August 5. The 900-seat venue has sold more than 70 percent of its tickets for the cabaret run, box office staff confirmed.

Across town, the Ballarat Mechanics' Institute on Sturt Street is hosting a photography exhibition highlighting the city's gold rush architecture. The exhibition, curated by local historians, is free and open Monday through Saturday.

Live Music and Outdoor Events

The Bridge Mall continues its Friday Night Live series, booking local and touring acts through to the end of August. Performances run from 6 pm to 9 pm, with the July 24 lineup featuring folk and indie rock artists. The series is free, supported by the City of Ballarat.

Karova Lounge on Camp Street is hosting a blues and roots festival on July 25, with doors at 8 pm. Tickets are $25 presale or $30 at the door. The venue's manager noted that advance sales have surpassed expectations.

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale, scheduled for late August through November, is now accepting registrations for its education program. Organisers expect more than 80,000 visitors across the three-month event, based on previous years' attendance.

For families, the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility on Mair Street will host a free outdoor cinema night on July 31, screening a family-friendly Australian film. Gates open at 6 pm, with the screening at dusk. Blankets and picnic rugs are encouraged.

Local theatre groups are also active. The Ballarat Theatre Company opens its winter production at the Wendouree Centre for the Performing Arts on August 6, with six performances scheduled through August 16. Tickets start at $35.

Arts Ballarat, the city's peak cultural body, is running its winter workshops program for adults and children at the Ballarat Arts Foundation studios. Courses in painting, pottery and digital photography run weekly through August. Places are still available for a number of classes.

Looking ahead, the Ballarat Writers' Festival returns August 21-23 at the Mining Exchange on Lydiard Street. The program includes author talks, panel discussions and a spoken word night. Early bird passes are $80 until July 31.
