Ballarat City Council recorded 12,400 visits to its free community programs in the first week of July 2026.

Winter temperatures and higher household costs have pushed more locals toward activities that require no entry fees or bookings. Council data shows park attendance rose 18 percent compared with the same period last year, with families citing the need for affordable weekend plans.

Lake Wendouree paths

Walkers and cyclists can use the 6-kilometre sealed loop around Lake Wendouree at any time without charge. The path passes the Ballarat Rowing Club boathouse and connects to the Wendouree neighbourhood via Gillies Street. Nearby, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens on Wendouree Parade offers free entry to its conservatory and rose garden beds, open daily from 7am.

Central cultural stops

The Art Gallery of Ballarat on Lydiard Street North runs free exhibitions seven days a week, with current displays featuring regional photography collections. Visitors can also drop into the Ballarat City Library branch on Sturt Street for reading rooms and free Wi-Fi access during standard opening hours. These sites sit within a short walk of each other, allowing a combined outing that stays entirely indoors when rain arrives.

Ballarat City Council figures from the 2025 annual report list 214,000 total attendances across its free public facilities, with the gallery and library accounting for 67,000 of those visits. No ticket purchases or memberships are required for standard access.

Check the council website or the notice boards at the library for any schedule changes before heading out on the weekend of 12-13 July.
