Families in Ballarat have lined up visits to established attractions this weekend as the mid-year school holidays begin on Monday 13 July.

The break aligns with cooler weather that pushes many households toward structured indoor programs and sheltered outdoor sites rather than spontaneous park visits. Local operators report steady bookings since the start of July, with several venues extending hours to accommodate demand from neighbourhoods such as Ballarat East and Wendouree.

Workshops and exhibits

The Art Gallery of Ballarat on Lydiard Street North runs daily drop-in art sessions for ages six to twelve from 10am to 2pm through 19 July. Staff set up tables with materials tied to the current regional collection, and each child leaves with one finished piece. Across town at the Ballarat Wildlife Park on Fussell Street, keepers lead 30-minute reptile talks at 11am and 2pm daily, with families able to book the behind-the-scenes tour for an extra fee.

Numbers from the park show 620 children attended the talks in the first week of July, up 18 per cent from the same period last year. The gallery recorded 340 workshop places filled by 9 July, with remaining spots released each morning at opening time.

Outdoor and movement options

At Lake Wendouree, the Ballarat Rowing Club on the western shore offers one-hour family row sessions on Saturdays for $12 per child and $18 per adult, including lifejacket hire. The nearby Ballarat Botanic Gardens on Wendouree Parade provides a free self-guided trail map that highlights winter-blooming plants, and staff have added temporary signage for families who want a 45-minute loop. Both sites sit within easy reach of Sturt Street cafes for post-activity meals.

Residents planning ahead can check the City of Ballarat website for updated availability or call the venues directly before heading out. Most programs accept walk-ins this weekend but recommend arriving before 11am to avoid queues.
