Ballarat Local Tours and Experiences Draw Steady Bookings

Ballarat tour companies added two new guided walks this month, one tracing the Yarrowee River from Bridge Mall to Lake Wendouree and another focused on the laneways behind Sturt Street.

July typically brings cooler days that push visitors toward structured activities rather than open-air wandering, and local operators have responded by expanding their schedules to meet the shift. Tourism Ballarat recorded 1.2 million visitors in the 2025 calendar year, with guided tours making up 28 per cent of those arrivals.

Routes through the city centre

The river walk begins each morning at 10am outside the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre on Sturt Street and covers 4 kilometres past the former woollen mills site and into the Botanic Gardens. The laneway tour, run by Ballarat Heritage Walks, starts at 2pm from the Art Gallery of Ballarat on Lydiard Street and stops at five restored buildings dating to the 1860s.

Both programs cost $45 for adults and $25 for children, with the first sessions selling out within four days of release. Bookings are handled through the operators' websites or at the centre on Sturt Street, where staff also sell combined tickets that include entry to Sovereign Hill.

Next steps for visitors

Anyone planning to join should check availability online the day before, as group sizes are capped at 12 people. The same operators will run extra evening sessions through August if demand holds.
