Ballarat's green technology sector posted 1,200 new positions in the twelve months to June 2026, according to data compiled by the city's economic development office.

The growth tracks federal incentives that took effect in January 2025 and lifted subsidies for rooftop solar arrays, battery storage and electric vehicle charging networks. Job seekers who hold current accreditation in photovoltaic installation or energy management systems now face shorter hiring cycles at firms operating along Sturt Street and in the Wendouree industrial precinct.

Two organisations anchor most local activity. The Ballarat Renewable Energy Hub on Lydiard Street North runs weekly briefings for certified electricians and project managers. Federation University's Mount Helen campus offers a twelve-week micro-credential in grid-scale battery maintenance that costs $1,850 and finishes with an industry placement at contractors working on the Ballarat West solar farm.

Skills in Demand

Employers list three core competencies first: Australian Standards 5033 and 4777 compliance, familiarity with SCADA monitoring platforms, and basic knowledge of the Victorian Energy Upgrades program launched in March 2025. Professionals without these credentials are directed to short courses at the Ballarat Tech School on Drummond Street, where the next cohort begins 28 July and finishes before the September quarter hiring round.

Salaries for qualified solar technicians average $92,000, while energy auditors with two years of field experience clear $105,000. Entry-level roles in battery assembly at the Wendouree facility start at $68,000 and include paid on-the-job training.

Next Steps for Applicants

Workers should update LinkedIn profiles with specific project references rather than generic sustainability statements and register with the Ballarat Chamber of Commerce green jobs portal before the end of July. Those already in trade roles can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning through Federation University to shorten the micro-credential timeline by up to four weeks. Listings for the coming quarter will appear on the portal from 15 July.
