Ballarat startups posted 52 new tech positions in the first week of July, with roles concentrated in AI integration and cybersecurity support.

Global moves by companies like OpenAI to embed tools in households have pushed local firms to scale teams quickly to meet demand for custom applications. This shift arrives as Ballarat positions itself against larger capitals by offering lower office costs and direct access to regional talent pools trained at Federation University.

Two organisations driving the activity sit in central Ballarat. The Ballarat Tech Collective operates from a converted warehouse on Armstrong Street North, where it runs weekly founder meetups and matches candidates to openings. Three blocks away, the Wendouree Innovation Hub on Howitt Street provides co-working desks and seed funding reviews, with six resident startups now advertising for mid-level developers.

Pay and pipeline numbers

Median salary for the listed roles reached $118,000, according to postings tracked by the Ballarat Chamber of Commerce on 8 July. The same data set showed 14 positions requiring experience with large-language-model deployment, a figure triple the count recorded in the same week last year. Federation University’s June graduate cohort supplied 31 applicants for these spots through its on-campus recruitment portal.

Next steps for applicants

Job seekers can register for the next Tech Collective intake session scheduled for 18 July at the Armstrong Street venue. Candidates should prepare portfolios that include at least one project using open-source AI libraries, as hiring managers at the Wendouree Hub have flagged that requirement in current listings. Local employers continue to accept applications through their own sites rather than national boards, shortening the time from submission to interview to under ten days.
