Ballarat Sports Venues and Infrastructure Support Local Athletes and Programs

Ballarat High School's Specialist Sport Program, introduced in 1997, gives elite athletes in netball, football, basketball, soccer and strength and conditioning access to facilities at the Victorian Institute of Sport while using local venues for training and competition.

School-Based Infrastructure

Ballarat High School runs a rowing program that fields up to 20 teams in the annual Head of the Lake regatta on Lake Wendouree, with pre-season training beginning in Term 3. High school athletics operates through the Ballarat Associated Schools and School Sports Victoria Eureka Division, with Ballarat High, Ballarat Grammar and Loreto College among the competing schools. Athletics Ballarat manages Llanberris Reserve as a free-access hard-surface training site, alongside additional venues at Victoria Park and Lake Esmond.

Youth Facilities at Wendouree West

New youth sports facilities at Wendouree West Recreation Reserve include a street soccer zone, skate and BMX facilities and a ReCranked Youth Shed. These additions support more than 1,200 local soccer participants and expanding youth programs. The infrastructure complements existing school offerings by providing dedicated outdoor spaces for teenagers.

Event Hosting Capacity

Ballarat will host the School Sport Australia Games 03 from October 25 to November 1, 2026, with more than 1,500 student athletes competing in national championships across seven sports at 15-plus venues. The event draws participants from every Australian state and territory plus a First Nations Netball Team. Existing venues such as Lake Wendouree and Llanberris Reserve form part of the network that will accommodate the competition.
