Ballarat Football League standings tighten as Springbank surges into top four

The Ballarat Football League ladder has undergone a significant reshuffle after Round 14 action over the weekend, with Springbank's commanding 38-point victory over Sebastopol at the Springbank Recreation Reserve propelling the Tigers into the top four for the first time this season.

Springbank kicked eight goals to two in the opening half to set up the 15.11 (101) to 9.9 (63) win, lifting them to fourth place on percentage ahead of North Ballarat City, which had a bye. The result matters because it tightens the race for the double chance-only two games now separate second-placed Melton from sixth-placed Lake Wendouree, with four rounds remaining.

Ladder shake-up as contenders stumble

East Point, which had held third spot since Round 8, tumbled to fifth after a shock 19-point loss to bottom-two side Darley at Darley Park. The Kangaroos managed just four goals in the first three quarters before rallying with four final-term majors, but Darley held firm for the 11.11 (77) to 9.14 (68) upset. The loss means East Point's percentage dropped from 122.7 to 118.2, allowing Springbank to leapfrog them.

At the top, ladder-leader Redan maintained its three-game buffer with a methodical 28-point win over Lake Wendouree at the Redan Recreation Reserve. The Lions, which have now won 11 of 13 matches, were led by six goals from full-forward Chris Graham, who took his season tally to 47. Redan's defence held Lake Wendouree to just three goals after quarter-time in the 14.10 (94) to 9.14 (68) victory.

Ballarat's grassroots leagues deliver close contests

In the Ballarat District Football League, the Buninyong-Ballarat derby delivered the game of the round. Buninyong edged out reigning premier Ballarat North by two points at Rist Park on Saturday afternoon, winning 12.8 (80) to 11.12 (78). The winning margin was the fourth time this season a BDFL match has been decided by fewer than a goal, highlighting the evenness of the competition this year.

Buninyong coach Michael Harris said after the match that his side's ability to win the contested ball in the final term was decisive. The Bombers trail the ladder-leading Sebastopol by four points in the BDFL table. Sebastopol, which also had a bye in the BFL this weekend, kept its BDFL top spot with a percentage edge over second-placed Lexton.

In the Ballarat Youth Girls competition, the leading Eagles team extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches with a 57-point demolition of the third-placed Darebin Lions at Eureka Stadium on Sunday morning. Eagles forward Mia Kavanagh booted five goals, giving her 31 majors for the season in what is shaping as a record-breaking individual campaign for the under-17 division.

Next weekend's Round 15 BFL fixture features a crunch match between East Point and Melton at Eastern Oval on Saturday, while Springbank travels to Redan in a test of the Tigers' top-four credentials. With all six finals spots still mathematically possible for nine of the 10 BFL clubs, the final month promises to be a logjam at both ends of the ladder.
