Ballarat College Sports Venues and Infrastructure Drive Local Growth

Federation University completed a $4.2 million renovation of its main indoor courts at the Mount Helen campus on July 1.

The work matters now because Ballarat colleges begin their winter competition schedules this month and need reliable spaces for training and matches ahead of interstate fixtures in August.

Work crews widened the playing floor and added new seating at the Mount Helen site while the Wendouree Sports Precinct on Gregory Street gained two extra turf fields for soccer and field hockey programs run by local colleges.

City records show Ballarat college sports events drew 18,400 spectators last year, up from 16,000 the previous season, with average ticket prices listed at $12.

Named sites and programs

The Mount Helen campus sits on the western edge of Ballarat and serves students from Federation University alongside those from Ballarat Secondary College. The Wendouree Sports Precinct lies near Lake Wendouree and hosts weekly training sessions for the university netball and rugby teams as well as school squads from the central business district schools.

Both locations received new lighting systems that allow evening sessions without earlier curfews, a change requested by coaches who cited limited daylight during the winter months.
