Ballarat Youth Sports Participation Data Shows Evolving Local Fitness Culture

Ballarat City Council data released 8 July 2026 recorded 14,872 registered youth participants aged 5 to 17 in organised sport, up from 12,150 two years earlier.

The increase arrives as national junior numbers remain flat and comes amid rising school holiday program costs at regional facilities.

Local programs driving the numbers

Registrations at the Ballarat Sports and Leisure Centre on Creswick Road grew 19 percent in the past 12 months, with the centre reporting 3,240 junior memberships. At Victoria Park in Ballarat East, the Ballarat Little Athletics Centre added 480 new athletes between October 2025 and March 2026.

Both sites sit within established residential catchments where families can walk or cycle to training, cutting transport barriers that affect outer suburbs.

Participation trends and costs

The council report listed average seasonal fees at $165 for team sports and $95 for athletics, with 62 percent of juniors using the $40 concession rate available to Health Care Card holders. Swimming club numbers at the Lake Wendouree Aquatic Centre rose 11 percent after the introduction of a $12 weekly casual lane entry for under-18s.

These figures point to steady rather than explosive growth, concentrated in lower-cost individual and small-group activities.
