Ballarat residents have packed public trails and gardens since the start of July, turning to free outdoor spots to stretch budgets and beat the cold.
Household expenses have climbed across Victoria this year, with electricity bills up 12 per cent on average since May, pushing families toward activities that cost nothing. The city’s winter weather, with daytime highs often stuck near 11 degrees, has not slowed foot traffic on the main walking routes. Council records show steady daily use of open spaces even on the wettest days of the month.
Loop walks and garden paths
The 6-kilometre circuit around Lake Wendouree draws hundreds each morning. Runners and dog walkers start at the boat ramp near Wendouree Parade and finish near the rowing sheds. A few blocks east, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens on Wendouree Parade offers glasshouse displays and labelled tree walks at no charge. Both sites sit within easy reach of Sturt Street buses, so visitors avoid parking fees.
Further north, the path beside the Yarrowee River through Black Hill Reserve links to the old mining dam site. Signs along the route note the 1850s gold workings still visible in the banks. Local bushwalking groups meet there on Sunday mornings without any booking or fee.
Library and community rooms
Inside, the Ballarat Library branch on Camp Street runs free craft sessions for children each Wednesday afternoon in July. The same building hosts public computers and newspaper reading areas open until 6 pm on weekdays. Nearby, the Ballarat Regional Art Gallery on Lydiard Street lets visitors view the permanent collection without payment on the first Sunday of every month.
City data released last week recorded 47,000 visits to the library system during June, a 9 per cent rise from the same month in 2025. Parks staff counted 18,400 cars at Lake Wendouree car parks over the same period, up from 15,200 the previous year.
