Ballarat's tech job market heats up as Accenture centre set for May 2025 launch

Ballarat's technology job market is showing signs of life, with between 75 and 185 active vacancies listed across major platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn and Jobted, according to data from those sites. IT-specific roles push the total to more than 300 open positions, a notable figure for a city of 118,137 people where the Gross Regional Product hit $7.69 billion in 2023.

Common openings include IT Support Technician, ICT Customer Support Officer, Network Administrator, M365 Developer and IT Manager. Salaries range from $70,000 to $100,000 a year, with IT support roles typically paying $70,000 to $90,000 and systems engineers earning $75,000 to $85,000, per listings on Indeed and LinkedIn.

Who's hiring, and where

Major employers with active tech recruitment in Ballarat include ANZ, IBM, Accenture, Amazon, EY, Coles, Kogan.com and the City of Ballarat government, according to job boards including Jobted and Seek. The biggest play ahead is Accenture's new technology and operations centre, slated to open in May 2025, which will create onshore jobs in application development, IT service management and business functions.

Many positions offer hybrid work arrangements, typically three days in the office with remote options, plus benefits such as rostered days off and superannuation above the national standard, based on Seek and Jobted postings. That flexibility matters in a regional city where the median individual income sits at $49,697, well below the typical tech salary floor.

The local IT market remains small, with limited specialist recruiter coverage. But industry observers expect growth as the State Government relocates IT roles to the Ballarat GovHub, and a fledgling startup community begins to take shape.

Experience gap persists for newcomers

Entry-level roles are scarce. Most listings require two to five years of experience in networking, system administration or cloud platforms such as M365 and SAP, according to multiple job ads on Seek and LinkedIn. That creates a barrier for local graduates or career changers hoping to break into the sector.

Ballarat's employment base is 62,005 jobs, with health care and social assistance the largest sector at 21.9% of the workforce, 13,576 positions. Manufacturing, the region's biggest export at $3.3 billion, includes advanced manufacturing for brands like IBM, Mars Wrigley and McCain Foods. Tourism adds about $772 million annually, drawing 2.9 million visitors in 2023. The tech sector, while smaller, is carving out space alongside these established industries.

The next 12 months will test whether the Accenture centre and government migration can supply enough mid-level and senior roles to anchor a bigger local tech scene. For now, job seekers with cloud and system administration experience have the best shot at the $70,000-plus roles on offer, provided they can clear the two-to-five-year experience bar.
