Ballarat Combines Solar, Wind Farms, Waste-Energy Plants Into Unique Clean Tech Hub
Local projects that link manufacturing sites, organic-waste processors and large-scale wind generation give Ballarat a renewable profile few regional centres can match.

Ballarat is forecast to become Victoria's largest energy supplier by 2040, driven chiefly by its expanding wind-farming sector.
The forecast matters because governments and investors now rank regions by their ability to deliver dispatchable renewable power alongside industrial decarbonisation. Ballarat already hosts operating and funded facilities that convert food-factory rooftops, municipal organics and agricultural waste into electricity, diesel and hydrogen, a combination that distinguishes it from cities focused on a single technology.
Named facilities already operating or under construction
McCain Foods Ballarat has installed almost 10,000 solar panels on vacant land behind its processing plant. Bioplant Energy is building a $165 million pyrolysis plant in the city that will process 150,000 tonnes of waste each year into renewable diesel, green hydrogen and electricity. Gaia Envirotech has received state funding for a bioenergy hub that will use rapid composting and anaerobic digestion to turn organic waste into energy. The Broo brewery project in the Ballarat West Employment Zone plans to combine solar, wind turbines, biogas and water recycling to reach 100 percent renewable electricity and carbon-neutral production.
These projects sit within a single regional economy rather than scattered demonstration sites. The concentration allows shared grid connections and feedstock supply chains that larger capital cities have not yet replicated at the same scale.
Evidence drawn from project records
Public records list the McCain array size, the Bioplant throughput and capital cost, and the state bioenergy grant to Gaia Envirotech. The 2040 supply forecast appears in regional renewable-energy summaries. No other Victorian regional centre currently lists an equivalent cluster of funded waste-to-energy, food-industry solar and dedicated wind assets in the same documents.
Further development will depend on grid-connection approvals and feedstock contracts already under negotiation by the listed proponents. Local planning documents continue to identify additional sites for both wind and bioenergy infrastructure.
