Key initiatives include AI-driven traffic signal optimisation, expanded high-speed public Wi-Fi zones, and smart energy grids aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
This announcement arrives amid rising urban growth pressures and a national push towards digital innovation in regional centres. With Ballarat's population forecasted to reach 150,000 by 2030, the city’s leadership is prioritising investments that blend sustainability, connectivity, and livability to maintain its competitive edge.
The roadmap builds on existing projects like the City Heart Revitalisation Program and the Ballarat Innovation Precinct on Lydiard Street, which currently host pilot programs testing Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for environmental monitoring. One upcoming development involves installing smart air quality monitors along Sturt Street, targeting traffic pollution hotspots identified in last year's council survey.
Meanwhile, the Ballarat Tech Hub on Peel Street is collaborating with regional utilities to deploy smart meter technology with real-time energy usage analytics, helping households reduce electricity consumption by up to 20%. Complementing this, a new 5G network trial within the Wendouree neighbourhood will support low-latency applications, from telemedicine to autonomous vehicle guidance.
The city has allocated $45 million over the next four years for these smart city projects, funded partly through Victoria’s Regional Digital Infrastructure Fund. Previous phases demonstrated promising results: a 12% reduction in peak hour congestion following initial traffic system upgrades on Mair Street, and a 10% energy savings among pilot homes using smart meters.
Planners project that deploying AI-based traffic analytics citywide could decrease commutes by 15 minutes during rush hours and cut CO2 emissions from vehicles by 8%. Similarly, expanding free public Wi-Fi to 75% of public spaces-including City Oval and Lake Wendouree precinct-is anticipated by the end of 2027, enhancing accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
