Wendouree West Reserve Launches New Youth Sports Zones in Ballarat
Dedicated zones and programs at local reserves and venues underpin participation for young athletes across multiple sports.
How we reported this
Ballarat has added new youth-focused facilities at Wendouree West Recreation Reserve, including a skate and BMX zone, a street soccer area, and a ReCranked Youth Shed, to support local teenagers and community participation.
Venues Supporting Major Youth Events
The city will use more than 15 venues to host the School Sport Australia Games 03 from October 25 to November 1, 2026, where over 1,500 student athletes will compete in national championships across seven sports. These venues form part of the infrastructure that enables large-scale youth competitions drawing participants from every Australian state and territory along with a First Nations Netball Team.
Programs Running at Existing Facilities
Ballarat Little Athletics operates a program for children aged 5 to 15 years every Saturday, catering to kids of all abilities at its established grounds. The Ballarat Futsal Club has also used local facilities to develop youth female talent, with three players aged 15 and Open selected for the Victorian team at the 2025 Football Australia National Futsal Championships.
Economic and Participation Impact
The upcoming national event is expected to generate over $2 million for the Ballarat economy through activity at the multiple venues. The combination of the new reserve zones and ongoing programs provides consistent access points for youth sport without relying on temporary setups.
Local families interested in these options can contact the relevant clubs or check council listings for current session times and registration details at the named reserves and grounds.
