Ballarat high school athletics registrations open July 20 for the 2026-27 season at clubs tied to schools across the city.

Winter training sessions give students a head start before the Victorian School Sport Victoria calendar begins in September. Families in growing suburbs like Wendouree and Sebastopol want clear entry points as participation numbers rise after two years of limited school carnivals.

Local clubs and venues

The Ballarat Athletics Club runs weekly Tuesday night sessions at the Lake Wendouree Athletics Track on Gillies Street North. Students from Ballarat High School and Mount Clear College often start here before moving into school teams. The Ballarat Sports and Events Centre on Creswick Road also hosts indoor sprint and jump drills on Thursday evenings for those avoiding outdoor winter conditions.

Both locations require a current Working With Children Check for any parent helpers and proof of age for under-18 athletes. New members receive a club singlet and training plan on sign-up.

Costs and requirements

Annual club fees sit at $185 for high school age groups, covering insurance and entry to Ballarat Regional Athletics League meets. Athletes also need spikes or running shoes, basic shorts and a singlet, with total starter kit costs around $120 at local stores on Sturt Street. The first competition date is set for September 12 at the Lake Wendouree venue.

Prospective athletes should email the Ballarat Athletics Club secretary at info@ballaratathletics.org.au or visit the desk at the Gillies Street track on Tuesday nights. Parents can collect forms at the Sports and Events Centre reception before the July 20 deadline to secure a spot in beginner squads.
