Ballarat families now pay an average $68 for a single child entry to major local attractions during the July school holidays, up from $52 last year, according to council venue data released this month.

The increase arrives as Ballarat City Council expands its holiday activity calendar from 13 July, with more sessions added at indoor venues to counter cold weather. Parents report longer wait times for bookings at popular spots and higher petrol costs for trips across the city’s spread-out suburbs.

Local venues and transport links

Two sites dominate family bookings this season. The Ballarat Aquatic and Sports Centre on Gillies Street North offers $19 child swim sessions with creche add-ons at $12, while the Ballarat Botanical Gardens on Wendouree Parade runs free ranger-led nature walks every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am. Both locations sit within 400 metres of bus stops on routes 1 and 4, yet parents still cite the need for pram-friendly paths and nearby parking that fills by 9.30am.

Bridge Mall traders have introduced a new parent pass this month that gives discounts at three cafes for purchases over $15 when families show a current Myki card. The pass is available from the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre on Sturt Street.

Prices and booking windows

Council figures show 1,240 holiday places sold in the first week of July, with most sessions limited to 25 children. Early-bird rates at the Aquatic Centre close on 12 July, after which the full $68 family ticket applies. Library storytime at the Doveton Street branch remains free but requires online registration 48 hours ahead.

Parents should check the council website for real-time capacity before leaving home and carry a printed copy of any booking confirmation, as mobile reception drops inside some older buildings at Lake Wendouree.
