Ballarat hosts a winter craft market at Bridge Mall starting at 9am on Saturday 11 July and a guided walk at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens from 10am on Sunday 12 July, both organised by residents who have run similar events for years.
These gatherings stand out now because national reports this week focused on service outages and travel delays, reminding residents here that face-to-face events still draw crowds even when screens go dark.
Stallholders at Bridge Mall
At Bridge Mall, vendor Lisa from Bakery Hill will display knitted scarves made from wool sourced on her family's property near Learmonth, a practice she began after her grandmother taught her the patterns in the 1990s. Nearby, the Ballarat Community Garden collective sets up a seedling exchange table that has operated every second Saturday since 2019. The market runs until 2pm with free entry and hot food options from local cafes along Sturt Street.
Last year's July market recorded 1,150 visitors according to City of Ballarat attendance counts, with 42 stallholders paying a $30 site fee each. Sunday's gardens walk costs $5 per person and covers the rose garden section first before moving to the conservatory, led by volunteers from the Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens group formed in 1982.
Practical steps for visitors
Check the City of Ballarat website or call the events line on 5320 5500 for any last-minute changes due to weather. Arrive early at Bridge Mall for parking along Grenville Street and bring cash for purchases, as many stallholders do not accept cards. The Botanical Gardens site offers free tram access from the city centre via the route that stops at the main gate on Wendouree Parade.
