Trains to Melbourne

V/Line operates regular services between Ballarat and Melbourne's Southern Cross Station. The journey takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes on express trains. Services run throughout the day, and Ballarat is one of the most popular regional rail destinations from Melbourne. The Ballarat line also connects to Ararat and Maryborough.

Local Buses

CDC Ballarat operates the city's bus network. Routes cover central Ballarat, Wendouree, Sebastopol, Mount Helen, and surrounding suburbs. The myki card is used for all public transport in regional Victoria, including Ballarat. Bus frequency is lower than in Melbourne, so planning around timetables is recommended.

Getting Around by Car

The Western Highway (A8) connects Ballarat to Melbourne in approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and continues west toward Ararat, Stawell, and the South Australian border. The Midland Highway connects Ballarat to Bendigo.

Parking is generally easy and affordable in Ballarat, with extensive free parking available near the city centre and Sovereign Hill. Bridge Mall and the main shopping precincts have dedicated car parks.

Cycling

Ballarat has a growing cycling network. The Ballarat Rail Trail and Yarrowee River shared path are popular routes. The relatively flat terrain around much of central Ballarat makes cycling accessible, though some areas have hills. Bikes can be taken on V/Line trains outside peak hours.
