What visitors should know and the must-see highlights in Ballarat

Ballarat recorded 124,000 cultural visitors between January and June this year, a 17 per cent rise on the same period in 2025, with July bookings already tracking ahead of last winter.

The increase stems from the completed upgrades to the Ballarat line that now run 22 services each weekday from Melbourne, drawing more overnight stays from interstate and overseas travellers who combine the city with regional day trips.

Venues worth booking ahead

Two sites sit at the centre of current itineraries. The Art Gallery of Ballarat on Lydiard Street North holds the touring show Light and Shadow until 14 August, while Sovereign Hill in the Golden Point area runs its winter evening gold-panning program every Friday and Saturday at 7 pm. Both locations require timed tickets during peak weeks.

Adult entry to the gallery exhibition costs $18, with children under 12 admitted free, and Sovereign Hill charges $72 for the combined day and evening pass. Figures released by the City of Ballarat show 38 per cent of July visitors purchased combined tickets that cover both sites plus the Botanical Gardens shuttle.

Getting around and timing your visit

Travelers should reserve gallery slots at least seven days out through the venue website, especially for weekend slots after 11 am. The Ballarat Visitor Centre on Sturt Street provides printed maps and real-time bus updates to Golden Point, and staff there advise arriving before 10 am to avoid queues at the main attractions.
